A quick peek into the feature length documentary I directed for the Kauffman Foundation entitled, "Here. Us. Now."
Mr. K Trailer
This is one of my favorite projects and not just because I won an Emmy for my work. It was truly a privilege to have had the opportunity to direct this film. I was able to tell a fabulous story, work with a wonderful client, crew and cast, spend time in Kansas City, travel around the US and film the President in the White House.
Imagine It Preview
A film school professor once told me, "Every film is an experimental film. It's never been don before." Well, thi sself-funded documentary proved to be just that, an experiment. The project was our contribution to the Kauffman Foundation's "E-Week" which celebrated entrepreneurship across the US and in this case, around the world. Working closely with Stanford University, we interviewed a number of Silicon Valley's luminaries and followed students as they set out to complete their challenge of creating value form a simple package of post-it notes. Sounds crazy but the results are amazing. The project premiered a year later at Stanford to a full house of 1200 people and marks the beginning of my continuing journey to create an online educational video thought library designed to inspire creativity, imagination and hope for humanity's future.
Imagine it 2: START!
With the success of the first "imagine it!" film, we ventured to make a bigger, better film. We like to think it's exponentially better so it's not Imagine It "2", it's Imagine It "squared". Like the first Imagine it! film, this film was self funded and was created in part to continue building the Imagine It Video Thought Library. We traveled across the country gathering dozens of interviews with scholars, inventors, entrepreneurs, engineers, futurists, authors, astronauts, entertainers and other brilliant and insightful people to continue our mission to inspire people to "imagine the world a better place, and then engage in making that happen".
For Love of Liberty - Introduction
I co-produced this epic documentary that we spent 10 years making. That's a long time but it's a story that is well worth telling and it won Best Documentary at the 42nd Annual NAACP Image Awards. This clip is the introduction to the film.
This is a short documentary I was commissioned to create to generate awreness about the benefits of aquatic therapy.
The New Testament Trailer
My business partner and I funded, directed, and produced the research, development and interviews for this epic project. The film unfortunately was never completed but we made one heck of a trailer.
In search of Dr Seuss
This film was nominated for 7 Emmys and I'm proud to say I worked on it from beginning to end as I served as the production manager, assistant director and post production supervisor. We built ever last set, prop and costume from scratch and it was lots of fun having the opportunity to work with so many celebs on a project of this magnitude.
Sex, Censorship & the Silver Screen
This 6 x 1 hr documentary mini-series was created for Showtime to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the cinema. Some things never change as the battle between art, commerce and the law began with the very first screening of a film which was an innocent shot of two people kissing.
Playboy 2000 - The Party Continues
My company produced this feature documentary for the Playboy Channel as a celebration of one of the 20th Century's most iconic brands at a time when they are about to enter an entire new millennium.
Eleventh Day Entertainment Documentary Demo Reel
This compilation was created as a pitch reel for my company, Eleventh Day Entertainment. The films contained in this assembly were are either written, directed, produced, and/or supervised by my then business partner Frank Martin and/or myself. Collectively they represent over twenty million dollars worth of production and span the history of America and the entertainment industry.
Goldwin Golf Guilty Spot
Comedy is fun. I had a great time directing this spot... and I even got to work with a golfer I grew up watching on TV with my Grandpa.
Got2B Attitude Spot
I always say a commercial isn't 30 seconds, it's 900 frames...and this one proves it. This spot was different from any other I had ever directed. It involved scoring and pre-recording music, a choreographer, lots of dancing, attitude, compositing and even more hair products. We spent two long weeks building these 900 frames for air on MTV but I think it was worth it.
Citre Shine Reflections Commercial
It was too much fun to have an entire city block, thousands of feet of 35mm film, a water truck, lights, crew, a camera and let's not forget... a pretty woman to shoot until the sun comes up.
Hergesheimer Motorports Commercial
Who has ever heard of shooting a spot for the price of lunch? Well we did it here. I designed, directed, shot, and edited this one all by myself. From hanging out the back of a pickup truck with camera in hand to making a Porsche go 150 mph on a a couple of jack-stands in a parking lot, we did it. I even got my Hitchcock cameo in this one. Porsches are always fun and hey, trade out is a good thing.
Citre Shine Bottle Commercial
This spot was done in the age of animated gas pumps and other computer animated inanimate objects doing all kinds of crazy things. So when my client came to us with a next to nothing budget... we decided to give them a commercial that did just that...next to nothing. (In fact it did absolutely nothing, but the client made us add some text graphics). That said, I think it's pretty funny and it's amazing what you can do with a single photograph and a voiceover. And, it worked well as a contrast to the big budget animated spots of the day.
Sonoma County Perintal Outreach PSA
When making PSA's there's never any money but always plenty of heart. We shot this one in a friend's garage on 16mm film and used my own son to close the spot. It's always fun to see him that young.
Rudy-Poe-Thicker-Fuller-Hair-720x480 - Computer
This was one of those agency concepts that, well, wasn't so great. But hey, polishing is what we do so we polished this one up and made it look really pretty.
Balance Bar Animated Commercials
When I received the storyboards for these two 15 second spots I immediately went to find some "old-school" commercial animators. I found some great guys that did a number of the spots I grew up watching.
presentation & promo
A short documentary made to promote the benefits of Aquatic Therapy.
Design. Build. Bluff.
I made this video for a fundraising event that provides resources for a group of architecture students to travel to the four corners part of the United States to build a 100% self-sustainable, off-the-grid home for an indian family on the reservation. The piece is designed to provide an overview of their program.
Logicon Militatry Contract Pitch
When Logicon came to us to make a pitch video, they didn't have a ton of money so we utilized the raw footage shot for the Army's commercials. We knew that our taxes paid for that material and therefore is in the Public Domain. PRetty clever on our part we thought as did our client. I edited and designed and produced all of the graphics animations for this piece.
Just Walkin' The Dogs
This was my first opportunity to work a drone. I had lots of fun making directorial suggestions to my buddy Cary while he was flying this contraption over this pack of pseudo-wild dogs. It’s always fun learning new things and I think it comes across in this piece that was edited for a 3 screen installation in the JustFoodForDogs' West Hollywood kitchen.
This short video was created shortly after we opened the doors at JustFoodForDogs. I co-founded the company and the goal is to explain to the public just what we are up to and why at this unique business. Since it's inception I have been a managing partner and in charge of producing and directing all forms of media. That includes the website, the photography, print and in-store graphics as well as all video production.
"Minutes" Professional Profile - Real Estate / Mike Rains
This concept is called “Minutes” and the beauty of it lies in it’s simplicity. Essentially a “Minute” is a 1-2 minute professional video profile that enables prospective customers to get a sense of who you are, what you do and why you do it. “Minutes” are the perfect introduction every time and work even when my clients are not. They are high-quality and affordable media presentations that only require a couple hours of the client’s time to become a reality.
Eleventh Day Entertainment Cmmunications Reel
We created this short piece to demonstrate all the various types of productions we did at my media production company at the time. This piece was a collective effort between myself, my partner and our editing team.
Eleventh Day Entertainment Corporate Reel
At my company, Eleventh Day Entertainment, I produced, directed and edited all of our corporate productions. This compilation contains a variety of projects with clients ranging from music and technology to the Navy and Department of Defense.
